snip & skinner

so we started a creative group again called: snip & skinner {the name we got, is thanks to a great logo design done by one of our students}. designer-makers need the get-together-time. we had a lovely time chatting, eating and making almost the entire Saturday.

what I love to do, re-booting

tjou-tjou was in a deep sleep for a year now. lot's of things kept me busy and ended up just being excuses to avoid what I love most: creating new products. in the last few weeks I realised that I'm in a battle with myself and I need to get over my blogging slump. talking about my creative process and struggles kept me inspired. so I hope with a lot of little steps I'll be getting back to the maker in me. at the moment I'm busy with a new idea for a product. yay!

liewe aarde, ek kan nie glo dat ek 'n jaar laas 'n blog geskryf het nie.🙈 so baie dinge het gebeur die afgelope ruk, waar begin ek? om een of ander rede het ek tot die besef gekom dat ek besig is om met myself te stoei en al die drama en hartseer om my as 'n verskoning te gebruik, om nie te doen wat ek so lief voor is nie. so, met klein stappies sal ek hopelik weer uit my blogging-dip kom. eerste stappie: 'n nuwe produk is in ontwikkeling. hoera!

ek is 'n vreeslike trotse lektor

one of my biggest inspirations on my creative journey is my students. this year i worked with my grad year graphic design students on the ISTD assessments. serena van der nest passed their assessments with flying colours. it is seen as a considerable achievement. membership of the international society of typographic designers is awarded to graduating students that demonstrate, through the quality of their work, their commitment to achieving the highest possible standard of visual communication. i am very proud of her. serena choose a brief where she had to create a book to demonstrate the philosophy of a chosen crafter. her chosen crafter uses expressive embroidery as a medium. serena took hours and hours to embroider letters in her book by hand.

'n groot inspirasie in my kreatiewe lewe is my studente. die jaar het ek die voorreg gehad om saam met ons derdejaar grafiese ontwerp studente aan die ISTD opdragte te werk. serena van der nest het die ISTD toetse geslaag. ek is so trots op haar, glo my dit was nie maklik nie. baie min studente bereik hierdie mylpaal. haar opdrag wat sy gekies het was om die filosofie van 'n handwerker uit te beeld in boekvorm. sy het 'n handwerker gekies wat pragtige kreatiewe borduurwerk doen. oral in haar boek het sy met die hand borduurwerk op haar letters gedoen.

i decided to make a new label to celebrate creatives that made me laugh. who does not need a laugh every now and then? blue q is the perfect place to go to for a giggle when you need it. they have never let me down over the years. go and visit their website for loads more fun stuff.

yay, it's eye candy day

i had a very busy year so far. let's hope that i can get to my own creative work to show you guys more regularly. but for now i'm drooling over other peoples work. i just love these illustrations done by sally nixon. a peek into the every day life of these ladies are strangely comforting. she also has a cool instagram account to follow.

i made a grey and purple poncho last year for the youngest. my oldest also wanted one.

blink swart

many moons ago i found this ring in an antique store in long street {cape town}. i fell in love with it. the problem was that the lady in the store replace the old stone with an ugly shiny blue glass stone and i did not wear it very often because i did not like the glitzy stone.
i replace the stone with this lovely plain black one so that the art deco design can stand out more. thanks to the team at swish diamonds & custom designs i love my "new old" ring so much i am wearing it every day!

ek vrek oor swart en ougoed, soos julle kan sien daar op my fotos hierbo. die storie agter daardie ring werk so: 'n paar jaar gelede het ek op die ring in 'n antieke winkeltjie in langstraat {kaapstad} afgekom. die oorspronklike steen was verlore en die tannie het 'n vreeslike blink blou glas steen in sy plek gesit. wel, ek het verlief op die ring, minus die lelike blink glas steen, geraak en dit gekoop.
so 'n paar jaar later besluit ek toe om die steen te vervang met 'n swart steen sodat die pragtige art deco ontwerp van dit kan uitstaan. 
baie dankie aan die span by swish diamonds & custom designs, dat hulle my gehelp het om die steen te vervang. 
nou dra ek die ring elke dag.
