snip & skinner

so we started a creative group again called: snip & skinner {the name we got, is thanks to a great logo design done by one of our students}. designer-makers need the get-together-time. we had a lovely time chatting, eating and making almost the entire Saturday.

ek is 'n vreeslike trotse lektor

one of my biggest inspirations on my creative journey is my students. this year i worked with my grad year graphic design students on the ISTD assessments. serena van der nest passed their assessments with flying colours. it is seen as a considerable achievement. membership of the international society of typographic designers is awarded to graduating students that demonstrate, through the quality of their work, their commitment to achieving the highest possible standard of visual communication. i am very proud of her. serena choose a brief where she had to create a book to demonstrate the philosophy of a chosen crafter. her chosen crafter uses expressive embroidery as a medium. serena took hours and hours to embroider letters in her book by hand.

'n groot inspirasie in my kreatiewe lewe is my studente. die jaar het ek die voorreg gehad om saam met ons derdejaar grafiese ontwerp studente aan die ISTD opdragte te werk. serena van der nest het die ISTD toetse geslaag. ek is so trots op haar, glo my dit was nie maklik nie. baie min studente bereik hierdie mylpaal. haar opdrag wat sy gekies het was om die filosofie van 'n handwerker uit te beeld in boekvorm. sy het 'n handwerker gekies wat pragtige kreatiewe borduurwerk doen. oral in haar boek het sy met die hand borduurwerk op haar letters gedoen.

all dolled up

i hate electric fences, but we had to put one up. they are so ugly. after pondering about this, i came across these birdies from green grass design. within a few days after i bought them online they arrived at my office in cape town from johannesburg.

ons moes 'n elektriese heining gedeeltelik om ons huis sit. so 'n draad is natuurlik vir 'n ontwerper 'n onooglike affêre. nadat ek vir 'n rukkie gewonder het of ek iets kan doen om dit mooier te maak, kom ek toe op hierdie voëltjies af, ontwerp deur green grass design. ek het die voëltjies op hulle web-winkel gekoop en woeps, binne in paar dae ontvang.

the design indaba expo was fabulous as usual. it is so difficult to go home when i'm there. i just want to stay forever. in the shot i'm admiring one of lulu k's stunning bags, handmade locally. you can see more colours of this design on the design indaba web site here.

soos gewoonlik was die design indaba expo die jaar weer stunning. dis so moeilik om huis toe te gaan. ek wil heeldag kuier tussen al die pragtige stalletjies en ontwerpe. hier bewonder ek een van lulu k se pragtige handsakke. al hulle sakke word met die hand gemaak. hier is nog 'n foto op die indaba webwerf van hierdie ontwerp in ander kleure.

the shoestring collective pop-up shop

a few weeks back i was invited by my friend leila, to sell my mugs and plates in her and her partner's pop-up shop in garden centre {cape town}, called the shoestring collective pop-up shop. they displayed my products beautifully. you will find loads of stunning designs, jewellery, products, plants... the list goes on and on and on.

een van my vriendinne, leila, van bow peep het my uitgenooi, om deel te neem aan hulle 'pop-up shop' in garden centre, met die naam the shoestring collective pop-up shop. die winkel lyk fantasties en al die producte en ontwerpe is pragtig. 

vele hande ligte werk

tjou-tjou are teaming up with some stunning ladies in wellington to create lovely products for the home. this is our first floor doily, made by issie. the doily is made from t-shirt yarn and is washable.

BRUL! sê die monster

the sweet & soutie girls are busy with another love project. this time we are making creatures from left over laundry {like that lonely single sock in the basket}. hilda kruger made lovely badges that we can add as we go {look at a post that i did on her work, here}. i just added a purple backing and viola herbert's done. the ongoing creative process is captured under the heading exquisite creature corpse, so check it out.

a gift from mom

if you ever drive through bredasdorp, go and visit julian's, a restaurant and ceramic showroom. i love their hand painted ceramic pieces. this set was a present from my mom. i love the old chipped enamel motives that was drawn on the pieces.

in bredasdorp is daar 'n lieflik restaurant met die naam, julian's. dis 'n pragtige restaurant, maar wat my oog al die afgelope paar jaar vang, is hulle handgemaakte keramiek produkte. hierde koffie en teestel het my ma vir my gegee vir kersfees. ek is mal oor die 'chipped'-emalje en emalje-'stencil'-print gevoel van die handgeverfde moetiewe op die stel.
